The future no longer embraced them

As children sifted through the ash and rubble
Alongside the birds and wild dogs
They protected every bone uncovered
With the diligence of ants
Sweating through the heat of day
While cinder still smoldered
And the softer ones mourned
The future no longer embraced them
As they toiled as servants to the old ways
