He kissed her in the evening
Postponing their engagement
He sadly held his bride
Trying to save this moment
She passed inside his eyes
He kissed her in the morning
and promised a swift return
As the cadre came to take him
Dress him in uniform
A harmless boy snatched away
Thrust into a nightmare world
Marching with his brothers daily
They arrived at destiny's thorn
He shivered in the trench
Through rain and bullets, smoke and fog
With rats to share his bench
Fighting over scraps with dogs
He prayed once more to end the war
As bullets screamed, explosions in the night
Yet no answer bore as bullets tore
His limbs from all sides
He fought even harder to remain
In his earthly toil
Until he bled his final drop of freedom
Upon the foreign soil
He kissed her in the evening
Though she never saw his face
He returned to her as promised
And yet she sits and waits
